Manchester: The UK’s New Cultural Epicentre

From the Madchester era of the late 80s and 90s - shaped by iconic bands including The Smiths, Oasis and The Stone Roses - Manchester has long held a deep-rooted connection to music and cultural expression.

More than three decades later, the city is once again commanding national and international attention, as artists, fans, creatives and industry leaders increasingly look north. With its cultural influence continuing to grow, Manchester is reinforcing its position as one of the UK’s most exciting and dynamic destinations.

In 2026, the city reached several major milestones.

The BRIT Awards were hosted at Co-op Live, marking the first time in the event’s 48-year history that the ceremony had taken place outside of London. The move represented far more than a change in venue; it reflected the UK’s evolving cultural landscape and the growing importance of regional cities. Broadcast globally, the ceremony delivered the BRIT Awards’ largest-ever international audience and further elevated Manchester’s status as a leading destination for music and entertainment. Following the success of the event, the BRIT Awards have already confirmed their return to the city in 2027.

Just days later, Manchester welcomed the MOBO Awards as the organisation celebrated its 30th anniversary. The awards, which champion Black music and culture in the UK and beyond, brought another wave of artists, creatives and industry figures into the city – further strengthening its reputation as a cultural powerhouse.

Yet the city’s evolution extends far beyond music alone.

Alongside the major award ceremonies, a week-long fringe programme recently took place across the city, celebrating local musicians, dancers, spoken word artists and poets, showcasing a thriving grassroots creative scene.

This wider momentum is also being reflected across fashion, food, hospitality and lifestyle.

In recent years, the city has hosted globally recognised events and brands, including the Chanel Métiers d’Art Show in 2023 and the Michelin Guide Ceremony in 2025 – further signals of Manchester’s growing international profile.

At the same time, a number of renowned London-based and global restaurant brands have chosen Manchester for expansion, including Chotto Matte, Circolo Popolare, Sexy Fish, Caravan and Blacklock.

Collectively, these moments reflect something much bigger. Manchester is no longer simply viewed as an emerging regional city; it is increasingly recognised as a globally relevant destination for culture, creativity, business and lifestyle.
